a film by Qiong Zheng
94 min., 2016

The documentary The Way Out follows three Chinese teenagers with very different family backgrounds, financial situations, and social environments. What they share is the influence of the same upbringing and education. They are reaching the age where they begin to think about their future and dream of big goals. One lives in the metropolis of Beijing, another in the city of Xianning in Hubei Province, Central China. A third lives in Huining, a tiny, remote mountain village in Gansu Province, one of China’s poorest regions. Each of them deals with life’s crucial questions about the future in a different way. The film accompanies them through their dreams, expectations, fears, and hopes. They must find their place in a rapidly changing Chinese society where success is valued more highly than traditional values.
