Gabriele and Günter fall in love at the beginning of the 1970s during the Cold War. He as a West German in Berlin, she as an East Berliner. The division of Germany runs right through their lives. Günter has spent a few years defending the West as a border soldier, Gabriele is a convinced and honest socialist. Can this lead to a lasting love affair? Gabriele’s application to leave the GDR remains unanswered for years. And as an East German, she is not allowed to marry a West German. What happened to their dream of a future together?
Gazale and Ahmed came to Germany as children of Lebanese refugee families in the mid-1980s. They get to know each other here and marry at their parents’ request. Gazale was only 14 and Ahmed 17 years old. They have three children. As tolerated asylum seekers, they live in constant fear of being deported. On February 10, 2005, the pregnant Gazale and her one-year-old daughter are deported to Turkey in a flash. Ahmed is on his way to school with his older daughters. The reason given by the immigration authorities was that Gazale’s parents had misrepresented their identity when they entered Germany and concealed their Turkish citizenship. Ahmed, who sees Germany as his home, fights for Gazale’s return. But the family remains torn apart for years. Will Gazale and Ahmed ever find each other again?
Olga and Andreas grow up as Russian-German children in a provincial town in Siberia in the 1980s. Their houses border each other and they are inseparable playmates. In 1989, Andreas’ family emigrated to Germany. In the Soviet Union, such a life decision was not made public. Olga and Andreas lose sight of each other. Five years later, Olga’s family also emigrated to Germany. The longing for sandbox love has remained with both of them. They look for each other in Germany and in their Siberian hometown. Eighteen years later, Olga finds Andreas via a Russian internet portal. They arrange a meeting. How will the meeting of the young people turn out?
